Winter can be a tough time for those living on the streets of Croydon & Purley. When local churches started talking about providing a hot meal and a warm place to sleep, Purley Baptist Church opened its doors. The rest, they say, is history; and Night Shelter was born.
Every winter now, we take in guests. A whole team of volunteers made up from church members, either cook, wash-up, entertain or simply provide a listening ear to those who need it.
According to Pauline Miller, one of the key co-ordinators at PBC:
"Night Shelter's function is to provide a safe environment, and a place to build community amongst the homeless people. It's a place of belonging, a sense of value, of being loved".
This is church at its best.
