Heads of Departments
For a church this size to function, we need to have a number of departments, each under the headship of what we call HODs (Heads of Departments). This is a voluntary, lay role, and HODs are appointed by the church members, by vote. | |
Chris Marvin - Technical Services Chris is in charge of running the church's technical services, which includes all the audio and visual equipment in the church. He has a growing teams that supports him during services and other special events in the church. As well as recuiting team members, Chris trains them and organises them into rotas, ensuring that the sound desk is properly manned, and the video displays contain all the appropriate images and information. | ![]() |
Carol Russell - Uniformed Organisations (Scouts & Guides) Carol's responsibilities extend to all the various uniformed organisations that operate from the church. These include all the groups that associate themselves with the Scouts & Guides movement, and include Beavers, Cubs and Explorers on the Scouts side, and Rainbows, Brownies and Rangers on the Guides side. Each group has to be properly run with their own leaders and helpers. Carol ensures that adult volunteers are properly supported in their roles and and helps ensure the smooth running of each group. | ![]() |
David Andrewartha - Pastoral Care David works closely with associate minister James Tetley, looking after home groups and pastoral issues. He's also involved with home group leader training. | ![]() |
Joy Langley - Mission Joy's job is to run the Mission Tteam and co-ordinate with all our overseas missionaries, keeping the church fully informed on how they're all doing. She is also responsible for co-ordinating overseas visits to our Missionaries.

Julia Davies - Community & Evangelism Julia's role at Purley Baptist Church is all about the great commission. The last command that Christ gave to his church before he returned to Heaven was to tell people everywhere about him. For Julia this means organising opportunities to do just that. | ![]() |
Richard Shakespear - Children's HOD Richard's role as Children's HOD is to ensure that Sunday School flows smoothly, and that is no small job. It ranges from teaching 6-8 year olds, filling in when people are absent, having meetings with the staff, liaising with parents, sorting out bills, making sure everyone has enough resources, monitoring adult volunteers and a great deal of prayer. A teacher by profession, Richard loves kids and that passion is essential for this role. | ![]() |
Margaret Loomes - Over 60's HOD Margaret looks after the old members of the church and has a wider ministry amongst the elderly in the local community. | ![]() |
Mike Rodwell - Facilities HOD Mike is kept constantly busy looking after an elderly church building, making sure that is is safe to use and continues to function properly while we wait for the demolition date. | ![]() |
David Warner - Social Action HOD David's role is one of ensuring that as a church we are aware of social issues that we should be supporting, both locally and globally. | ![]() |
